Surviving the Time Change: A Guide for Christian Moms

navigate the time change with peace, patience and faith

The time change can throw our families off balance and disrupt our routines, often making this a challenging season. As moms, we wear many hats, balancing the needs of our children, our marriages, and often our own careers, all while seeking to live a life of faith. Yet, a time change like this can also be an invitation to reset—to seek God's peace amid our own need for rest. Let’s walk through some practical and faith-centered strategies to help you and your family transition smoothly.

1. Prepare Gradually

If you can, begin preparing a few days in advance. Shifting your family's schedule by just 10-15 minutes each day leading up to the time change will ease everyone into the new routine. Gradually adjust meal times, nap times, and bedtime, so that by the time the change arrives, your family is already in sync.

For children, especially young ones, make it a game! A "sleep countdown" can help them feel more excited and involved. This small buffer period can make a big difference, helping everyone adjust without the shock of a full-hour change.

2. Prioritize Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene is critical year-round, but during a time change, it becomes even more important. Establishing a peaceful bedtime routine can make the transition easier for everyone. Aim to start winding down at least an hour before bed:

  • Dim the Lights: This naturally signals to the body that bedtime is approaching.
  • Reduce Screen Time: Avoiding screens in the evening helps with melatonin production, making it easier to fall asleep.
  • Create a Calming Environment: Soft music, white noise, or diffusing lavender essential oil can create a calming atmosphere.

Make this time an opportunity to pray with your children or read a short devotional as a family. When bedtime includes moments of spiritual connection, it becomes easier for everyone to rest well, secure in God’s peace.

3. Get Outside and Use Natural Light

Natural light, particularly in the morning, is one of the best ways to help reset our internal clocks and improve mood. Sunlight sends a powerful signal to our bodies to wake up, helping us feel more energized during the day. Spend a few minutes outside each morning, even if it's just sitting with your coffee on the porch or going for a quick family walk before starting the day.

Being in nature is also a wonderful opportunity to connect with God’s creation, reminding us of His presence in our daily lives. Take a moment to reflect on Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” These moments outdoors can become acts of worship and gratitude, grounding you in faith as you begin each day.

4. Practice Patience with Yourself and Others

Transitions like these are hard on everyone. Children, especially, may feel the effects of a disrupted schedule more intensely, leading to crankiness or difficulty sleeping. Give yourself and your family grace. Acknowledge that it’s normal to feel a bit “off” for a few days.

If things feel overwhelming, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself of God's unending patience with us. Pray for a spirit of peace and resilience, knowing that He is your strength. Consider Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God…will guard your hearts and minds.” God is with you, even in the midst of disrupted schedules and frazzled moments.

5. Lean on Faith and Self-Care

Amid the busy demands of motherhood, it’s easy to set our needs aside. But times of change, even small ones, are reminders to care for ourselves. When you’re well-rested and centered in your faith, it’s easier to manage the emotional ups and downs of family life.

Here are some practical ways to lean on faith and nourish your own spirit during this time change:

  • Begin with Prayer: Start each morning by inviting God into your day. Ask for His strength and guidance to handle whatever comes with grace.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: If you’re feeling extra tired or overwhelmed, remember that this transition is temporary. Allow yourself to rest without guilt.
  • Find Community: Talk to other moms at church or within your faith community who may be going through similar experiences. Sharing encouragement and advice can be a powerful way to support one another.

As Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Remember, true rest and peace come from Him. Allow God’s love to be a steady anchor through this period of adjustment.

Time changes may not be easy, but they are also temporary. With a few practical strategies and a focus on faith, you can help guide your family through this transition with grace. Remember that God is with you, offering strength, patience, and peace. By leaning on Him and taking these small steps, you can embrace this season of change with confidence and calm. Adjustments take time, but with patience and faith, you'll soon find a new rhythm for your home.
